Week 8
We are moving along with our letters and this week learned J, K and F. Students in kindergarten will need to know the upper case, lower case, letter sound and a word that starts with that sound version of each letter. Please review the letters we have already covered with your child. It would help them out! Students should be able to easily identify 8 letters or more to be meeting expectations for first term in kindergarten.
We were lucky to have two of our students find birds nests and volunteer to share them with the class. We spent time looking at the nests drawing them and eventually attempting to build our own. Some of us had some difficulty making a nest that stuck together...imagine what the birds must go through!
We continue to work on patterning in math as well as one to one correspondence up to 5 and subatizing, which is recognizing dots or images without having to count each image.
We also spent a bit of time enjoying the last of the fall leaves and creating some art with leaves. Students transformed their leaves into fantastic foxes on Friday as we studied the letter F. If you happen to be in the school, they are up on our hallway bulletin board.

Week 7
What a busy and exciting week! We learned the letters R and H this week and spent lots of time working on Halloween activities. We got together with out big buddies and made some very cool Jack o'lanterns that are on display in our classroom.
In math, we continue to make patterns. We are working on abab patterns, aabaab patterns, abbabb patterns and abcabc patterns.
On Thursday we had a visit from Constable Lund from the RCMP. She gave the kids a great presentation on Halloween Safety. Please review the sheet she sent home for great Halloween tips.
Friday was a very exciting day as we all got to wear our costumes and showed them off to the whole school during our costume parade. We enjoyed some fun Halloween activities in the morning and enjoyed snacks and a movie in the afternoon. Thanks to all those that sent snacks and came to help out. We had a great day!

Week 6
Another short week this week. We continue to work through the alphabet, spending more time on T and learning S.
In math we are continuing to learn about sorting and patterns. The big highlight this week was our little trip to Shannon Lake Park to find signs of fall. We brought back many leaves, twigs, pine cones and even a few bugs. Then we spent two days sorting, making patterns, making art and simply exploring all that fall has to offer! Thanks to everyone who helped with this little field trip!

Week 5
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. This was a short but fun week as we spent time focussing on pumpkins and fall. We learned the letter D and the letter T as well as doing some work on recognizing numbers in math.
Of course the highlight was the Pumpkin Patch. We had great weather and the boys and girls had lots of fun. We went through the corn maze, practised with the pumpkin sling shot, enjoyed the hay maze, went on a hay ride, had a snack and picked out pumpkins to bring home. Whew! Lots of fun and great memories had by all. Thanks to all the parents that came to the patch to help out...we couldn't do it without you!

Week 4
We had a very busy week this week! We worked on learning the letter A and came up with many words that start with A. See if we can tell you the sound that A makes and a word or two that begin with that sound.
We continued with our apple study in science and learned how apples are affected by acids and bases and learned that lemon juice keeps an apple from browning. We also make apple sauce in the classroom and enjoyed having an apple sauce treat.
Of course, in the lead up to Thanksgiving, we had a few turkey themed activities. In math, we sorted turkey pictures from smallest to largest (or largest to smallest) and sorted apples into bushels, small and large.
We got together with our buddies this week and made turkeys with coffee filter tails and also turkeys out of apples and marshmallows. We always have fun with our big buddies!
Please remember to send in the field trip forms and money for the field trip. Students without a signed form will not be permitted to go on the field trip...Thanks!
I hope that everyone has a great long weekend and that you all enjoy your Thanksgiving time with your family. See you Tuesday :-)

Week 3
Week three was actually our first five full day week. There were lots of tired children by the end of the week!
We spent a time this week learning about the letters O and M. Students made an owl and did a directed drawing of a mom. Directed drawings are something we will be doing every week. They are a great way to reinforce our letters, work on pencil control and work on following step by step directions. We also don't forget past letters and made a panda that goes along with our character for P, Polly Panda.
In math, we are continuing to work on sorting and will be moving into patterns shortly. We also learned a bit about graphing this week as we graphed our results of our apple tasting. We tasted a green, yellow and red apple. In kindergarten, the favourite apple was the green Granny Smith...go figure!
Science sees us learning about fall and apples. We are learning how apples grow, where they grow and what they need to grow. As part of our apple unit, we made apple crisp this week. Yum, yum!
Hopefully everyone likes their green shirts! Thanks to the school for providing this gift. Just a reminder that Friday is our school spirit day and a great day to wear your green shirt.
Just a reminder that library day is Thursday but please bring your books back on Wednesday. This allows us time to get books checked in and also allows for a days grace should you forget to bring your book back. The goal is to have everyone able to choose a new book on Thursday.
There is no school for students this Friday and with Thanksgiving on Monday, that makes a very long weekend for students! Hope everyone has a great week!

Week 2
Week two saw us beginning to learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet. We started with the letters "P" and "U". We made purple potato prints on pink paper, pizza, a drawing of a pup and an umbrella. Please help us remember the sounds that these letters make and point them out to us if you see them in print.
We also spent some time sorting. Sorting is the first area we cover in our math curriculum. We learned that we can sort by shape, size, colour or a combination of these attributes. We talked about all the things that we can sort and had some fun sorting many objects. I suggested to the children that they could help sort laundry...
We had our first library block on Thursday this week. Thursday will be our library day weekly so please look for a new book Thursday night. Please keep these books home for the week and return them on Wednesday for check in so we are ready to take a new book out first thing Thursday morning.
We had our first fire drill this week. For this first one only, I took the children out before the bell as this is sometimes an intimidating event. We will have another one this week and will stay in the school until the fire alarm goes off. The children did a great job lining up and staying quiet for our drill!
Thanks to all parents for coming to parent teacher interviews. It was a real pleasure to meet all of you and to touch base about how our year is starting off. Thanks also to all families who attended our back to school BBQ. I know the rain was a bit disappointing but all the children seemed to be having a great time anyway!
Just one little reminder, Monday is picture day. They often start with the kindergarten classes so please make every effort to be at school on time.

Week 1!
Hello families and welcome to kindergarten! It has been a very exciting week as we have found out which students are in which classes and have begun to get settled into those classrooms. Last week really has been all about routines. Where do things belong, how do we do things at school, and what are the names of all our classmates. We are still working on all these things, and every day will provide us with something new to take in and experience. Last week we also went on a school tour and have met some other people around our school including our secretary, Mrs. Simpson, our vice principal, Mr. Bruce, our principal Mr. MacLeod and Mrs. Malone our grade 4 buddy teacher.
Hopefully your student has shared some of the stories and activities we have done with you. We read the story the Kissing Hand and made a hand print and poem as well as reading Pete the Cat and colouring a picture of him to take home. Pete the Cat is one of my favourites because the moral of his story is whatever challenges you are faced with, just keep going and "it's all good!". On Friday, we participated with with the entire school for our first assembly in the gym followed by our Terry Fox Run. They boys and girls did a great job and everyone celebrated on the field with a juice box when the run was over. Thanks to all parents who came to volunteer!
This coming up week, we will be having parent teacher interviews. Please have a look in your child's backpack for your interview time. This went home on Friday. I look forward to meeting you all later this week!
Also on Friday, the PAC is hosting the welcome back BBQ. This is a great event starting at 4pm. that kicks off our new school year and provides families a chance to reconnect with each other after the summer or meet some new people if you are new to the school. I hope to see many of you there. Have a great week!
